Labour leaders have called for an urgent review of Nigeria’s N70000 national minimum wage, saying it no longer reflects current economic realities, as reported by cbinews.tv.
The call was made at the 2026 Nigeria Rights of Workers Summit in Birnin Kebbi, organised to mark 88 years of legally recognised trade unionism in Nigeria. The event brought together labour leaders, policymakers, employers and civil society groups.
Speaking for NLC President Joe Ajaero, Deputy President Amba said the current wage cannot cope with the rising cost of living and called for fresh talks with federal and state governments.
Former NLC President Ayuba Wabba said decent work goes beyond pay and must include workers' rights, social protection and dialogue between workers, employers and government.
Summit convener Ekpa Stanley said the anniversary should push for tangible gains for workers. Kebbi Governor Nasir Idris assured workers that the state will implement any new national minimum wage and will advocate for better pay at the Governors Forum.
