Veteran defender ends 14-year international career after five major tournaments.
Kyle Walker announced on Tuesday that he is retiring from international football after earning 96 caps for England national football team and playing in five major tournaments.
The 36 year old defender was part of the England squads that reached the finals of the UEFA Euro 2020 and UEFA Euro 2024.
However, the former Manchester City player has struggled to reach his previous level since joining Burnley this season, making selection for the next FIFA World Cup increasingly unlikely.
Walker said he was proud of his achievements with England despite feeling sad about the decision.
He said representing his country at five major tournaments and reaching major finals alongside teammates and managers he worked with had been a great honour. He added that the time had come to close the chapter on his international career.
Walker’s last appearance for England came in a friendly against Senegal national football team in 2025. He leaves as the tenth most capped player in England men’s football history.
The The Football Association said a tribute to Walker’s international career will be held at a future match after the World Cup.
England manager Thomas Tuchel praised Walker’s contribution, saying he had always viewed him as one of England’s great players who fully embraced the honour of representing his country.
He added that Walker’s 14 year international career and five major tournaments reflected his dedication.
