A Russian drone strike meant for weapons ended up devastating a village instead, and President Zelensky says it should never have been stored there in the first place.

Thirty-seven people have died, and almost 400 have been evacuated after a Russian drone hit a depot storing weapons for Ukraine's military on the outskirts of Kyiv late on Friday, cbinews.tv reports.

The strike set off shells, mines and drones in a huge secondary blast in Myla village in Bucha district, just west of the capital. It damaged nearby homes, including a care home for elderly and disabled people. Four children are among forty-two injured. Rescue work was still ongoing Saturday.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said the site definitely should not have been there and called it terrible negligence. He confirmed criminal proceedings for official negligence are now open. The prosecutor general is reviewing the legality of storing explosives next to residential buildings.

Russia's defence ministry said it targeted an ammunition depot holding components and boosters for FP1 and FP2 long-range drones.

Locals are furious. Resident Liubov Pavlenko, 45, said everything is completely damaged and structural integrity is compromised. Another resident, Borys Daniyluk, 61, asked why ammo was stored where food used to be, right next to a populated village.

This is the second time in months. In July, a similar blast in Vyshneve killed nine, injured dozens and damaged over 280 homes. An investigation then found a state-owned firm had breached storage rules. Prime Minister Sergiy Koretsky said a lesson had not been learned and called it criminal negligence in the fifth year of the full-scale invasion.

The wider picture remains grim. Ukraine said it shot down 233 Russian drones overnight, but further strikes hit Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy and Zaporizhzhia. Officials said a fourteen-year-old was killed in Boryspil district and a two-year-old died after a drone crashed in Obolonskyi. In total, five people were killed across Ukraine in the past day.

Meanwhile, Kyiv has intensified its own campaign on Russian economic targets. In Russia, officials said two were killed and twenty-five injured in Belgorod and Rostov, plus hits on Ozon logistics centres.

Storing munitions near homes during regular aerial attacks raises serious questions, and Zelensky says appropriate conclusions will be drawn.
