It’s not Offa robbery this time, Kwara politics just took a very personal turn, and it’s all about who went to secondary school.
Right, so here’s the gist, as first detailed by cbinewstv:
The Kwara State Government has officially dragged former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, to court. The charge? Criminal defamation against Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
What did he allegedly say? According to the one-count charge filed by the State Ministry of Justice at the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin, Saraki is accused of publishing and circulating statements, both on social media and in the newspapers, claiming that Governor AbdulRazaq didn’t attain secondary school education.
The government isn’t playing. They say the comments were false, insulting, and capable of causing public disturbance, which is an offence under Section 399 of the Kwara State Penal Code.
At Wednesday’s sitting, drama started early. Prosecution counsel Rafiu Balogun told the court the matter was for arraignment, but Saraki wasn’t in the dock. He asked Justice Mohammed Folorunso to issue a bench warrant, insisting Saraki had been served but just didn’t show up. He also wanted the court to throw out the defence’s application for an adjournment.
Saraki’s lawyer, Jimoh Mumini, SAN, wasn’t having it. He fired back on two fronts: first, that the state high court doesn’t even have jurisdiction, that this should be at the Federal High Court, and second, that his client wasn’t properly served in the first place.
After plenty of back-and-forth and a two-hour recess, the judge sided with the defence on one point: Saraki is entitled to ask for an adjournment.
So, no bench warrant for now. Justice Folorunso has adjourned the whole thing till 3 July 2026, for hearing of the preliminary objection and, possibly, Saraki’s arraignment.
It’s Kwara’s two biggest political gladiators going at it again, only this time it’s not about budgets or projects, it’s about certificates.
