Should a university lecturer ever pick up a cane? Kwara State Polytechnic says no, and it has just suspended one who did.
A lecturer at Kwara State Polytechnic in Ilorin has been suspended after a video of him physically assaulting candidates went viral, cbinews.tv reports.
The footage, which began circulating on social media on Monday, shows several candidates kneeling with their hands raised. They take turns receiving strokes of the cane on their palms from the lecturer.
The video sparked outrage online. Many Nigerians questioned why corporal punishment was being used in a tertiary institution and called for disciplinary action against the lecturer.
National Association of Nigerian Students President Akinteye Babatunde described the incident as unacceptable. He stressed that students should not be subjected to physical punishment.
Responding to the backlash, the institution issued a statement on Monday through its Public Relations Officer, Halimat Garba. She clarified that those seen in the video were not Kwara Poly students. They were candidates of the Interim Joint Matriculation Board programme held on the school’s premises.
The polytechnic said it still does not know why the lecturer took that action, but it condemned the method outright. “While the intention for which the action was done is not yet known, we must emphasise that the approach taken was wholly inappropriate,” the statement read. “The Polytechnic stands firmly against any form of violence or physical punishment as a means of discipline.”
Management added that the school is committed to a culture of respect and constructive engagement in learning environments. “We believe that education should be rooted in respect, understanding, and constructive guidance. There are far more effective and humane ways to instil important values in students,” the statement said.
For now, the lecturer has been relieved of his duties pending the outcome of an investigation, cbinews.tv confirms.
