So, Governor Umaru Bago has just unveiled plans for a massive 500-unit housing estate in Kontagora, and it’s all part of a bigger push to expand urban infrastructure and make decent, affordable housing actually accessible for residents.
According to cbinews.tv, the Governor disclosed this while inaugurating the residential layout plan for the project. The estate will sit on a 40-hectare parcel of land belonging to the state government – land that was originally reserved for the Radio Niger Corporation.
Governor Bago revealed that the land had been encroached upon over the years, with criminal elements allegedly taking over parts of it. So, the government has now reclaimed it and decided to put it to much better use.
Here’s how it will work: the state government will provide all the site-and-services infrastructure to get the estate ready, before plots are allocated to prospective buyers.
And it’s getting a royal name too. The estate will be named after the Sarkin Sudan of Kontagora, Muhammad Barau Mu’azu II, in honour of his contributions to the development of the emirate.
Governor Bago said he’s confident the project will open up Kontagora for even more development, boost economic activities, and help more families own their own homes. He also added that the state will be collaborating with the Renewed Hope Housing Project to see the scheme through.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Bello Agwara, shared more details – the layout actually covers about 305 plots of different sizes, including 100-by-50-foot and 100-by-30-foot plots, plus three commercial plots.
It’s not just houses, either. The estate is set to have a neighbourhood centre, shopping mall, children’s playground, clinic, and other supporting infrastructure. Proper community living.
Agwara noted that the whole design aligns with the Bago administration’s New Niger Agenda, which is all about sustainable urban development and improving access to quality housing across the state.
