Fancy paying nearly £13 million to HMRC in one go? King Charles just did — and he’s happy for you to know about it.
Right, so here’s the tea from cbinews.tv — King Charles has gone public with his tax bill, and it’s a big one. For 2024-25, he handed over £12.9m to HMRC, making him the first monarch ever to actually show us the receipts. That figure puts him in the top 100 UK taxpayers. Not too shabby.
Prince William isn’t far behind either. The Prince of Wales paid £7.76m in tax over the same period, according to the new royal report and accounts. Between them, father and son have sent more than £50m to the taxman since Charles became King in 2022.
Now, before you start picturing the King packing boxes for Buckingham Palace, don’t. The report also confirmed that Charles and Queen Camilla are staying put at Clarence House. No palace moves on the cards.
So, where’s the money coming from?
The King gets his cash from the Duchy of Lancaster — that’s land, property, and investments that pulled in £25.2m in 2025-26. Add in his private investments and income from Balmoral and Sandringham, and you’ve got a decent pot. All of it gets taxed.
William’s money comes from the Duchy of Cornwall. Yes, that includes the Oval cricket ground. After costs for official duties and staff are covered, he pays the top rate of income tax on what’s left. His office says it’s all independently audited to keep things proper.
But here’s the catch
Tax expert Dan Neidle from Tax Policy Associates told cbinews.tv the disclosure is “highly opaque”. We know the total, but not the breakdown. How much was income tax? Capital gains? What expenses did he claim? No idea. As Neidle put it: “We don’t know what expenses he’s deducted to come up with the figure on which he pays the tax.”
Palace officials say publishing the numbers is all about “transparency” and “accountability”. It was a personal choice by both Charles and William to release them.
Other bits from the royal accounts:
- The Sovereign Grant — public funding for the Royal Household — jumps to just under £100m in 2027-28.
- William’s ditching the £1.5m annual rent from Dartmoor Prison. It’s been empty since 2024 because of toxic gas, so he’s sending the cash to the local Princetown community instead.
- Most expensive trip? William’s 3-day Saudi Arabia visit at £130k, just beating the King and Queen’s Italy state visit at £126,946.
- That royal train ride to Lancaster? £48,460. It’s being retired by 2027 to save money.
- 177 helicopter trips last year cost £733,063.
For context, last year Charles paid £11.7m and William paid £8.34m in 2023-24. So, both bills are up.
Still, we don’t get to see their full private income or investment details. And the 2025-26 tax figures won’t land until next year.
