Teenager leads Mercedes one two as Hamilton takes first Ferrari podium.
An emotional Kimi Antonelli won a grand prix for the first time on Sunday in China ahead of Mercedes teammate George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, who claimed his maiden podium for Ferrari.
The 19-year-old Antonelli converted becoming the youngest pole sitter in Formula One history into victory after both McLarens dramatically failed to start the race in Shanghai.
CBI News reports that Antonelli briefly lost the lead at the start but once he regained the front position the teenager controlled the pace and cruised to the chequered flag. Charles Leclerc finished fourth in the second Ferrari.
Hamilton, as he had done in Saturday’s sprint, made a strong start and had taken the lead by the time the field exited the opening complex of turns.
Leclerc also launched brilliantly and managed to get past Russell, who had started second on the grid.
The top four traded positions several times before a safety car on lap 11 brought them all into the pits.
When racing resumed, Antonelli led from Hamilton, with Leclerc in third and Russell in fourth.
By lap 29 Russell had passed both Ferraris to move into second and set off in pursuit of his young Italian teammate, who by then was more than seven seconds ahead.
Four-time world champion Max Verstappen endured another setback in Red Bull’s difficult start to the season when he was instructed to retire the car on lap 46.
Antonelli was in tears at the finish as he celebrated the biggest moment of his career.
