Things just got messy for Kenya’s Health Minister Aden Duale.
On Monday, the High Court found him in contempt of court for ignoring orders to halt construction of a US-backed Ebola quarantine facility at an air base in central Kenya, cbinews.tv reports.
The facility, located near the town of Nanyuki, is meant to host Americans who may have been exposed to Ebola during the outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. But the project has sparked protests across Kenya.
Despite court orders issued in late May and early June telling the government to pause work, flights carrying medical equipment and specialist staff have kept arriving at the base. That’s according to flight tracking data as well as US and diplomatic sources.
Justice Patricia Nyaundi Mande was clear in her ruling. She said Duale was guilty of contempt of court by commissioning construction at the site despite the orders.
“The Court cannot permit its orders to be rendered hollow,” she stated.
President William Ruto has backed the project. Speaking to Reuters last week, he said Nairobi was right to allow the US to build the isolation centre as part of Kenya’s broader preparedness plan.
