Clinton Nyapara Mogesa died in high-casualty attack in Donetsk.
A Kenyan family is appealing for support to repatriate the body of 29-year-old Clinton Nyapara Mogesa, who was killed in Ukraine while fighting for Russia.
Mogesa initially left Kenya for a job in Qatar in 2024 but later informed his relatives that he was travelling to Russia.
On Saturday, Ukrainian authorities reported he died in a so-called “meat assault” in Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, after being recruited in Qatar.
His body was reportedly not evacuated by Russian forces, and he was carrying the passports of two other Kenyans.
His death has raised concerns over Kenyans being recruited to fight in the war in Ukraine.
Vincent Okemwa, Mogesa’s cousin, said the family struggled to believe the news when first informed.
The information was initially relayed to Mogesa’s brother by a colleague with a relative in Russia before it became public.
Okemwa said Mogesa had stayed in contact during a three-week training period in Russia but had not been heard from since 28 October.
The family is now in a “pathetic state,” he added, noting that Mogesa’s father had sold land to support his son’s travel to Qatar and had seen him as the family’s hope for a better future.
