Kenyan activist has shown interest in becoming president.
Prominent Kenyan activist and vocal government critic Boniface Mwangi has announced that he will contest the 2027 presidential election, weeks after deadly protests rocked the country.
CBI News reports that Mwangi made the declaration in Nairobi, the epicenter of last year’s youth-led demonstrations against President William Ruto’s administration.
The protests, which spread nationwide, left more than 100 people dead and drew widespread condemnation over police brutality and the government’s use of terrorism charges against protesters.
A longtime critic of Ruto, Mwangi has himself faced terrorism allegations linked to the unrest, though no charges were ever formally filed.
In May, he was briefly detained in Tanzania while attending the treason trial of opposition leader Tundu Lissu.
