As global oil supply chains tighten following disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, Kenya has taken an urgent step—temporarily relaxing fuel quality standards to prevent a nationwide shortage and economic strain.

The Kenyan government has announced a temporary waiver of fuel quality standards in response to ongoing supply disruptions linked to tensions in the Middle East.

CBI News notes that the crisis, exacerbated by the closure of the critical Strait of Hormuz, has significantly affected global shipping routes essential for oil and gas imports from the Gulf region.

Acting on requests from the energy ministry and key stakeholders in the petroleum sector, the Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry confirmed that it will adjust fuel specifications by allowing a higher sulphur content—raising the maximum limit to 50mg/kg for a six-month period.

According to the ministry, the decision is aimed at maintaining fuel supply and cushioning the economy from the ongoing global supply shock. Authorities noted that the policy will be reviewed after six months or earlier if international supply conditions improve.

The move comes amid growing global concern over the economic fallout from the disruption. António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, warned that the blockage of the vital shipping route is “strangling the global economy,” adding that supply chains could take months to fully recover.

Kenya’s decision underscores the far-reaching impact of geopolitical tensions on energy security, particularly for countries heavily reliant on imported fuel.
