Bandits are back in parts of Kebbi — and Governor Nasir Idris isn’t waiting around to act.
Kebbi State is tightening the screws on security after a worrying spike in bandit attacks, with Governor Nasir Idris calling for an immediate shake-up of the state’s security strategy.
It all came out of an emergency security meeting on Saturday at Government House, Birnin Kebbi, as reported by cbinews.tv. The governor sat down with the state’s top brass — we’re talking the Brigade Commander, Commissioner of Police, Director of State Security Service, NSCDC Commandant, Vigilante Commander, plus the Customs and Immigration bosses.
Before heading into the closed-door session, Idris didn’t mince words. He’s especially concerned about the notorious Lakurawa faction causing havoc in Wasagu Chiefdom and parts of Argungu Emirate.
“We must review our existing security strategies and introduce new measures to address the resurgence of banditry in some parts of the state,” he said. “The protection of lives and property remains our top priority, and we are prepared to take every necessary step regardless of the cost implications.”
While the meeting was still going, Deputy Governor Umar Abubakar Tafida was already on the road to Wasagu Chiefdom. He led a high-powered delegation to commiserate with victims and get a first-hand look at things. The team included the Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Alhaji Salisu Dangoje, the Emir of Zuru, Muhammad Sanusi Mikailu Sami Gomo III, commissioners, and several board chairmen.
At the palace of the Chief of Wasagu, Alhaji Mukhtar Musa Muhammad, Tafida passed on the governor’s sympathies: “The governor shares in your pain and remains fully committed to restoring peace and security across Wasagu Chiefdom and other affected communities. Government will continue to work closely with security agencies and community leaders to bring an end to these attacks.”
The delegation also toured affected areas and chatted with community leaders about getting locals more involved in security efforts.
Idris says Kebbi hasn’t been sitting on its hands. The state has trained thousands of youths for community security ops, handed over 100+ operational vehicles, 7,000 motorcycles, and kept up financial support for frontline personnel.
Next up? The governor plans to take the State Security Council’s recommendations straight to President Bola Tinubu, the Federal Ministry of Defence, and Defence Headquarters. He’s banking on tighter collaboration between federal, state, security agencies and local communities to bring back lasting peace.
