It's the news no Nigerian football fan wanted to wake up to. Just hours after reports of a miraculous recovery, Katsina United have now confirmed their player, Chinedu Ozor, has died after collapsing on the pitch.

In what has been an incredibly distressing 24 hours for the club, here's what we know.

According to cbinews.tv, the tragedy unfolded on Tuesday morning during Katsina United's pre-season friendly against Niger Tornadoes at their home ground in Katsina.

We're told Ozor, who only recently joined the Chanji Boys, collapsed just nine minutes into the game. He was rushed straight to K-Dara Specialist Hospital in Gidan Dawa, where he was initially pronounced dead, with his death later confirmed at Katsina General Hospital.

But then came the twist that sent the entire Nigerian football community into an emotional spin.

While his body was being transported to the mortuary, his roommate reportedly noticed movement in one of his hands. Chaos and hope followed. He was immediately rushed back to Katsina General Hospital and placed on life support in the Intensive Care Unit for 24 hours at the request of his family.

As the club's Media Officer, Nasir Gide, told Channels Television on Wednesday:

“It was his roommate that said he noticed the player moving his hand while at the mortuary. The family therefore requested that the body should not be deposited in the mortuary until after they arrived.”

Sadly, despite the best efforts of the medical team, the club has now officially confirmed that Ozor has passed away. Management is expected to hold a press conference later today to provide more details.

For those who don't follow the NPFL closely, Katsina United are currently preparing for the new 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League season. Pre-season friendlies like this one against Niger Tornadoes are standard - low-key games meant to build fitness. Ozor, a former Kano Pillars defender, was seen as one of their recruits with a promising career ahead of him.

The Katsina State Government had already issued a condolence message before the mortuary incident, with Governor Dikko Umaru Radda describing it as a "devastating loss" and "deeply shocking and heartbreaking."

A painful pattern we can't ignore

As heartbreaking as this is, it's not an isolated incident in football. We’ve seen it before, globally.

Many will remember Cameroon's Marc-Vivien Foé, who collapsed and died during the 2003 Confederations Cup. Closer to home, there was Kano Pillars' Chinedu Udoji in 2018 and Nasarawa United's Chineme Martins in 2020, who both collapsed during NPFL matches.

It raises that difficult conversation again about player welfare. A 2023 FIFPRO report found that sudden cardiac arrest remains the leading medical cause of on-pitch death in professional footballers, with most incidents linked to undetected heart conditions. Christian Eriksen's collapse at Euro 2020 showed us that rapid CPR and defibrillators can save lives - equipment that is still not standard at many lower-tier and pre-season venues across Africa.

This is a huge loss for his family, for Katsina United, for Kano Pillars where he made his name, and for the entire Nigerian football family.
