Big move in Katsina as the Police roll out a new elite unit designed to hit violent crime hard — with intelligence, speed, and closer community oversight built in.
According to a report by cbinews.tv, the Katsina State Police Command has just unveiled a brand-new Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), and it’s clearly been set up with one goal in mind — to get a tighter grip on rising violent crime across the state.
The official launch happened on Friday in Katsina, where Commissioner of Police Ali Umar Fage explained that the new unit is part of wider police reforms driven by the Inspector-General of Police. The idea, he said, is simple but crucial: make operations more coordinated, more intelligence-led, and much quicker to respond when threats emerge.
In his words, the VCRU is meant to “consolidate the efforts of all tactical operational units into a more coordinated, intelligence-driven structure capable of responding swiftly and effectively to emerging security threats.”
So what exactly will they be targeting? Quite a lot, actually — armed robbery, kidnapping, banditry, cattle rustling, illegal arms possession, and other violent crimes that have been troubling communities.
Fage didn’t just talk structure, though — he stressed timing too, describing the unit’s creation as “timely and necessary” for strengthening security architecture and rebuilding public trust.
On staffing, he reassured residents that officers selected for the VCRU weren’t just picked randomly. They’ve been chosen based on experience, discipline, competence, and commitment — and, importantly, have gone through rigorous training. They’ve also been reminded to operate within the law and respect human rights while carrying out their duties.
Interestingly, there’s also a transparency angle to all this. A Civilian Oversight Board has been set up to keep an eye on how the unit operates. It brings together traditional leaders like the Emir of Katsina and the Emir of Daura, alongside civil society groups, the Nigerian Bar Association, the National Human Rights Commission, youth groups, trade unions and other stakeholders. The board will monitor performance, receive feedback, and help ensure accountability between the police and the public.
To support operations on the ground, the unit has also been equipped with armoured patrol vehicles, other operational vehicles, and motorcycles — a clear signal that this isn’t just a paper reform, but something intended to move fast and act fast.
Fage also took a moment to commend the Inspector-General of Police for driving reforms, and praised officers of the Katsina Command for staying resilient despite tough operational conditions.
