Rapper seeks dialogue after UK festival controversy grows...
U.S. rapper Kanye West said he would be willing to meet members of the Jewish community in the United Kingdom following criticism over his planned headline appearance at this year’s Wireless Festival.
In a statement, the artist, also known as Ye, said he had been following the debate surrounding the event and wanted to address concerns directly.
“My only goal is to come to London and present a show of change, bringing unity, peace, and love through my music,” he said, adding he was open to meeting community representatives “to listen.”
The comments come after years of backlash over a series of anti-Semitic and pro-Nazi remarks by the rapper, which have drawn widespread condemnation.
West previously issued an apology in a statement published by The Wall Street Journal in January, attributing his actions in part to manic episodes linked to bipolar disorder, as he seeks to rebuild his public image.
The controversy has intensified ahead of the July festival, with sponsors distancing themselves and politicians voicing criticism over his booking.
Festival organiser Festival Republic defended the decision, with managing director Melvin Benn saying the company may have erred in not consulting Jewish groups beforehand.
Benn said the artist’s past behaviour was “abhorrent” but urged for understanding, citing mental health factors and the possibility of change.
However, Phil Rosenberg, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, said the defence would not reassure many within the community.
The British government is also reviewing whether West, 48, should be permitted entry into the country.
