A lawmaker representing Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency of Kano State, Muhammad Danjuma Hassan, has died at the age of 66 after a prolonged illness.
CBI News reports that the Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Akin Rotimi, confirmed in a statement on Saturday that Hassan died on Friday evening.
Rotimi described his death as a major loss to the National Assembly and the country, noting his long-standing contributions to legislative development over several years.
According to him, the late lawmaker was widely respected as one of Nigeria’s foremost Legislative Counsels and Legal Draftsman, with several laws bearing his influence.
He said, “His passing is a profound loss to the House of Representatives, his constituents, and the nation at large.
“With his demise, Nigeria has lost one of its foremost Legislative Counsel and Legal Draftsmen, whose contributions significantly advanced legislative development and constitutional processes.”
Rotimi also conveyed the condolences of the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, to the family of the deceased, his constituents, and the people of Kano State.
He added, “May his soul rest well, and may his legacy endure.”
Hassan, who was elected to the House in 2023 on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), served as Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary.
Before joining partisan politics, he had a long career in the National Assembly bureaucracy, where he rose to the position of Permanent Secretary.
During his time in the House, he also served on several committees, including Public Petitions, Aviation, Solid Minerals, Constitution Review, and Treaties, Protocols and Agreements.
His burial is scheduled to take place on Saturday according to Islamic rites.
