After more than a month of fear and prayers, six schoolchildren and three adults have finally made it home — walking six hours through the bush to freedom.
Good news coming out of Kaduna at last, according to cbinews.tv. Six schoolchildren, their driver, and two other adults who were snatched by suspected bandits back in April have been released after 36 long days in captivity.
The group was kidnapped on 26 April 2026 along the Akwando-Kachia Road. They were in a vehicle heading from Akwando village to Kachia town when bandits struck. Nine people were taken that day, and sadly, a young girl reportedly died during the attack.
Mr Manasseh Samuel, spokesman for the Kuturmi Unity Development Association (KUDA), confirmed the release. He said, “The victims returned home on Sunday morning after trekking for about six hours through the bush.” He also thanked everyone who kept them in prayers and offered support while they were gone.
Former media aide to the late Kaduna governor Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa, Mr Reuben Buhari, also shared the news on Facebook. He wrote: “Thirty-six days after they were kidnapped while on their way to school in Kachia from Akwando village, six schoolchildren, the driver of the vehicle and two other adults regained their freedom yesterday and got home this morning after trekking for six hours in the bush.”
Buhari added his “special gratitude to everyone for their prayers and contributions in different ways that led to their freedom.” He noted the children had a traumatic ordeal and missed almost an entire school term, but said the community is just thankful they’re alive.
The relief is real, but the worry isn’t over. Buhari asked people to keep praying for others still being held. Some residents taken from Awon village have now spent 42 days in captivity, while those from Ariko village have been gone for 57 days.
