Germany are on the hunt for a new boss and guess who’s top of the list? Jurgen Klopp.
Right, so things have got a bit messy for Germany. Julian Nagelsmann has officially stepped down as men’s national team coach, and the German FA are already making moves to chat with Jurgen Klopp about taking over.
According to cbinews.tv, Nagelsmann asked to be relieved of his duties on Thursday after Germany crashed out of the World Cup far earlier than expected. The DFB agreed and ended his contract with immediate effect.
It’s a proper U-turn from Nagelsmann. Just after Monday’s last-32 defeat to Paraguay on penalties, the 38-year-old insisted: “I’m not someone who runs away.” But by Friday, he’d changed his tune.
He told cbinews.tv: “I’ve done a lot of thinking in the days since our elimination and have consulted with trusted individuals both personally and within the federation. The decision was anything but easy for me. My top priority has always been the team’s success. After such a bitter disappointment, they deserve the chance for a fresh start.”
This was Nagelsmann’s second major tournament in charge. He took Germany to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals on home soil, where they lost to eventual winners Spain in extra time. But the World Cup was a disaster. Germany haven’t won a knockout game since lifting the trophy in 2014, with group-stage exits in 2018 and 2022 under Low and Flick.
The DFB didn’t waste time. In a statement reported by cbinews.tv, they confirmed: “We will now seek talks with Jurgen Klopp. He has already signaled his general willingness to take on the position.”
DFB sporting director Rudi Voller added: “After the disappointing World Cup exit for everyone, Julian’s decision deserves our respect, because he’s taking responsibility and putting the national team as a whole above himself. Of course, we all would have liked a different outcome to the tournament and a more convincing performance from our team. But Julian is and remains an excellent coach, and I’m convinced he’ll continue on his successful path.”
Nagelsmann took over from Hansi Flick in September 2023, initially until after Euro 2024. That deal got extended to this World Cup and then all the way to Euro 2028. Safe to say he won’t be seeing that one through.
So, over to Klopp then? The DFB certainly hope so.
