June 12 was meant to celebrate 27 years of democracy in Nigeria, but the streets of Abuja told a very different story.

So, things got heated in Abuja this Friday. According to cbinews.tv, police fired tear gas at protesters who had taken to the streets to call out bad governance and rising insecurity. And yes — journalists covering the demonstration got caught in it too.

It all went down on June 12, the same day Nigeria was marking 27 years of uninterrupted democracy. Instead of just celebrations, though, demonstrators used the anniversary to demand urgent government action on the big issues hitting everyday Nigerians: economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and the soaring cost of living.

It’s no secret things have been rough lately. As DAILY POST noted, insecurity has spiked, with schoolchildren and teachers recently abducted in Oyo and Borno states. On top of that, many families are struggling just to put decent meals on the table as hardship bites harder across the country.

Basically, protesters are saying “enough is enough” — and Friday’s tear gas response shows just how tense things have become.
