He’s back at the Bernabéu. After 12 years away, ‘The Special One’ is coming home — but he’ll have to wait for the presidential election before the big reveal.

As reported by cbinews.tv, José Mourinho has officially signed a three-year deal to take over as Real Madrid’s new head coach.

Now, don’t expect the grand unveiling just yet. Madrid won’t roll out the red carpet until after the club’s presidential election wraps up on 7 June. Bit of a tease, really.

The 63-year-old is packing his bags at Benfica, where he only rocked up last September. He still managed to steer them to third in the Primeira Liga this season before Real came calling.

If this feels like déjà vu, that’s because it is. Mourinho was the Real boss between 2010 and 2013, and he didn’t leave empty-handed — La Liga, Copa del Rey, and a Spanish Super Cup all went into the trophy cabinet.

He’s stepping in for Alvaro Arbeloa, who only took the reins in January after Xabi Alonso said his goodbyes. And let’s be honest, Mourinho’s got a job on his hands. Real ended 2025-26 trophyless. Barcelona nicked La Liga with a 2-0 El Clásico win, and Bayern Munich dumped Los Blancos out of the Champions League 6-4 on aggregate in the quarters.

Since his first Madrid exit in 2013, José has been a busy man. Back to Chelsea for title number three and an EFL Cup in 2014-15. Then Man United in 2016 — Europa League, EFL Cup, Community Shield in year one, before it all went south in December 2018. After that? Spells at Tottenham, a Europa Conference League win with Roma in 2022, a stint at Fenerbahçe, and most recently, Benfica.

Second time lucky at the Bernabéu? We’ll see.
