Is Portugal facing its most awkward standoff between legend and manager yet
Portugal boss Jorge Jesus says he has nothing more to add after Cristiano Ronaldo published a lengthy account of their recent dispute, according to cbinews.tv.
Approached by journalists on Wednesday, October 7, morning as he left home for the Portuguese Football Federation headquarters, Jesus said he had read the statement and was heading to work as usual.
In a post shared by Fabrizio Romano on X, Jesus said, I read the statement, and now, like I do every day, I am going to the Federation headquarters to work, to think about the Portuguese national team. I have nothing more to say.
Ronaldo released his version on Tuesday. The 41-year-old said he left the camp during the recent international window because Jesus broke his word twice, first by warming him up against Norway and not bringing him on, then by failing to deliver agreed talking points at a press conference afterwards.
Late on Tuesday, Jesus had said he had not read the statement because he was watching the Portugal under-21 side instead.
This is more than a tactical call. Ronaldo, with over 200 caps and more than 130 goals for Portugal, has been the face of the national team for two decades.
Being left to warm up without playing felt personal. For Jesus, who took charge with a reputation built at Benfica and Flamengo and is known for blunt honesty, it is about authority and squad balance.
Portugal have juggled star power and team unity since the golden generation of Figo and Rui Costa. The Norway game was seen as a chance to rotate, but the optics of Ronaldo on the touchline dominated headlines.
Jesus insists no lasting rift exists and Ronaldo remains eligible. He is now at the Federation planning the next squad. Whether Ronaldo is recalled will be the real test of whether this is just a bump or a genuine break.
