He's back for a third time, and this time, he's here to stay.
Well, it's official, Joao Cancelo is a Barcelona player again!
The Spanish champions confirmed on Thursday that the Portuguese full-back has rejoined the club as a free agent, putting pen to paper on a deal that keeps him at Camp Nou until 30 June 2029.
According to cbinews.tv, the 32-year-old actually terminated his own contract with Saudi side Al Hilal just to make the move happen. Talk about wanting to come home.
Barca fans will know this story well by now. This is Cancelo's third spell in Catalonia, having already had two loan stints — including the second half of last season where he helped Hansi Flick's men retain the La Liga title.
It's been quite the journey for him, Portugal, Spain, Italy, then Manchester City in 2019, loan spells at Bayern Munich and Barca in 2023/24, a move to Al Hilal in 2024, and now back to where he clearly feels at home.
He becomes Barca's latest summer arrival after Rodri, Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, with the Catalan giants still hunting for a new striker following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres. They fancied Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid, but the Rojiblancos are refusing to play ball.
Flick's side kick off their La Liga defence away at Elche on Sunday, and with Cancelo back bolstering that defence, they'll fancy their chances.
