JAMB Completes UTME Question Automation

Nigeria’s Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), says it has completed the last phase of its decade-long automation drive with the digitisation of question authoring for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
CBI News reports that the milestone was announced during a training programme for test developers held at the University of Ibadan.
JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, said that the new system allows examiners to develop questions remotely from any location, eliminating the need for travel while reducing costs and administrative stress.
In a statement, JAMB described the initiative as the tenth and final stage of reforms aimed at improving operational efficiency and safeguarding examination integrity.
Oloyode stressed that the board remains committed to maintaining transparency and credibility across all stages of the examination process, and disclosed that it has increased accredited Computer-Based Test centres from about 800 in 2025 to more than 1,000 in 2026.
He added that nearly two million candidates had already registered, exceeding figures recorded at the same period last year, while warning that the PIN vending deadline would not be extended.
The Registrar also cautioned candidates and parents against engaging in malpractice, reiterating that there is no shortcut to academic success and that offenders would face strict consequences if caught attempting to manipulate the system.
Meanwhile, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Akure, Prof. Adenike Oladeji, said that improved automation would strengthen quality assurance and reduce the need for post-UTME screenings, as stakeholders in the university sector welcomed the development.
Similar endorsements came from the Fountain University and the African School of Economics, whose leaders noted that the innovation would enhance documentation, evaluation, and overall confidence in the admission process.
