Things are getting more serious in the DR Congo, and health officials are sounding the alarm.

According to cbinews.tv, the Ebola outbreak is accelerating at a frightening pace. In some hotspots, the number of cases is now doubling.

In a sign of just how concerning things have become, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus jetted into Kinshasa on Wednesday to meet President Félix Tshisekedi. It’s his second visit since the outbreak was declared back in mid-May. He was joined by the Director-General of Africa CDC, Jean Kaseya, and both leaders agreed - the situation is still deeply worrying.

The numbers tell the story. Congo’s Ministry of Health says we’re now looking at 3,874 confirmed cases and 1,751 deaths.

There is some help on the way. The United States has just announced an extra $242 million for the emergency Ebola response, preparedness and humanitarian support across the region.

What makes this outbreak particularly tough? It’s caused by the Bundibugyo virus strain, and there’s currently no approved vaccine or treatment for it. That makes it the second-largest Ebola outbreak ever recorded, and the fastest-spreading in Congo’s history. Health teams are in a race against time to get it under control.
