Israeli strikes killed at least 12 people in Gaza since dawn on Sunday, the territory’s civil defence agency said, while an Israeli military official said the attacks were carried out in response to ceasefire violations.
The strikes came despite a U.S.-brokered truce that entered its second phase last month, with both Israel and Hamas accusing each other of breaching the agreement.
The civil defence agency, which operates under Hamas authorities, said one strike hit a tent sheltering displaced people in Jabalia in northern Gaza, killing five people and injuring several others.
A separate early morning strike in the southern city of Khan Younis killed five more people, the agency said, adding that one person was killed in Israeli shelling in Gaza City and another by Israeli gunfire in Beit Lahia in the north.
Al-Shifa and Nasser hospitals confirmed they had received the bodies of at least seven people.
“Israel doesn’t understand ceasefires or truces,” Osama Abu Askar, who said he lost his nephew in the Jabalia strike, told AFP. He said those killed were struck while sleeping.
Dozens of relatives and mourners gathered at Nasser Hospital, where bodies wrapped in white shrouds were laid out ahead of funeral prayers.
An Israeli military official said forces had acted in response to what he described as Hamas violations of the ceasefire agreement.
“The violation included an identification of several armed terrorists who took cover under debris east of the yellow line and adjacent to IDF troops, likely after exiting underground infrastructure in the area,” the official said.
