Israel said its forces had mistakenly fired on a United Nations base in southern Lebanon, wounding three Ghanaian peacekeepers.
Israeli airstrikes struck central Beirut and its southern suburbs early Wednesday, killing at least six people and injuring 24 others, Lebanon’s health ministry said.
A loud explosion was reported in the Bashoura area, which had also been targeted last week. A building at the site was reduced to rubble, according to a Reuters photographer.
The strike followed a warning issued by the Israeli military. Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency said one of the strikes hit an apartment in the Zokak al-Blat neighbourhood in central Beirut.
The area was also hit last week when Israeli forces struck a branch of Al-Qard Al-Hassan, a financial institution associated with Hezbollah.
Another strike hit the Basta district, where witnesses reported multiple explosions. The areas struck lie near key Lebanese government sites, including the finance ministry and the prime minister’s headquarters.
The strikes came hours after Hezbollah launched dozens of rockets into northern Israel overnight, in an escalation of cross-border hostilities.
Israeli warplanes also hit central Beirut at dawn, destroying apartment buildings in some of the most intense airstrikes on the capital in decades, widening the conflict involving Israel and Iran.
A day after Israel said it had killed Iran’s security chief Ali Larijani, it said it had also killed Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib.
Iran confirmed Larijani’s death and retaliated by firing missiles into Israel, killing two people near Tel Aviv, Israeli authorities said.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said the killings would not affect operations, adding that the Islamic Republic did not depend on individuals.
Nearly three weeks into the conflict, there were few signs of de-escalation. Rising energy prices have added to political pressure on U.S. President Donald Trump, with diesel prices climbing above $5 a gallon.
Israel has intensified strikes on Lebanon and launched a ground offensive in the south targeting Hezbollah, which has fired across the border in support of Tehran.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei rejected proposals relayed through intermediaries to ease tensions, saying the United States and Israel must first be “brought to their knees,” according to a senior Iranian official.
Worst strikes on central Beirut for decades.
Residents said no warning was given for strikes in other central districts, where Lebanese authorities reported at least 10 people killed. Smoke rose from damaged buildings as debris littered the streets and cars were wrecked.
While Israel has been striking Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs of Beirut for days, the latest attacks were among the worst to hit central parts of the capital in decades.
Inside Israel, an Iranian missile struck a residential area in Holon, south of Tel Aviv, setting cars ablaze and damaging buildings, witnesses said.
“There was an alarm, we went into the shelter, we heard a huge boom,” resident Leah Palteal said. “When we came out, we saw fire … everything here was blown up.”
