Thick black smoke billowed from Tehran's Shahran oil depot and refinery on Sunday March 8, 2026, as flames burnt after an Israeli strike hit the site late on Saturday March 7, 2026.
Footage showed burnt-out trucks and other damaged vehicles at the scene, as workers inspected the aftermath.
A tanker driver said shrapnel struck his truck as he moved it away from the fire.
According to Iranian media, three oil depots in the Kohak, Shahran, and Karaj areas were attacked by Israeli warplanes."
Local Iranian media reported a "large fire broke out at Tehran refinery" and confirmed that "Tehran refinery and an oil storage facility were hit by two missiles."
Earlier on Saturday March 7, 2026, US President Donald Trump said Iran would face a 'major strike', while the Israeli military announced it had launched "a new wave of attacks on the Iranian regime’s terrorist infrastructure in Tehran."
The US and Israel reportedly carried out strikes on Iran on the same day while Tehran announced retaliatory attacks which targeted Israel and US interests in the region. There were reports of explosions in several Gulf countries.
