The centre, once occupied by dozens of UN aid workers, was seen as a vital hub for the agency's administrative and logistical operations...
Israeli forces demolished a United Nations aid headquarters in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood in East Jerusalem on Tuesday January 20, 2026 after it seized the compound in 2025 amid claims of Hamas involvement.
Bulldozers and heavy machinery tore through the structure once used by the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).
National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir was present at the site, which was heavily guarded by security personnel.
According to reports, Israeli forces entered the compound, which consists of several large buildings and small structures, around 7 AM local time, and demolished the site.
A UNRWA spokesperson condemned the move, described it as a 'serious violation of international law', and that it goes against the privileges and immunities of the United Nations.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry claimed the action was 'carried out in accordance with international law'.
It added that the facilities are on land Israel considers to be part of the country.
In October 2024, Israel's parliament passed a law which barred the United Nations' operation in the country.
It alleged that some UNRWA workers were members of Hamas and were part of the October 7 attacks - a claim denied by the UN.
