Tensions are rising on the global stage as Israel starts deporting hundreds of activists linked to a Gaza aid flotilla interception that has sparked widespread condemnation and diplomatic protests.
Israel has started deporting hundreds of activists who were detained after Israeli forces intercepted a Gaza-bound aid flotilla earlier this week, according to the Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel, Adalah, as reported by cbinews.tv.
The rights group told Al Jazeera on Thursday that around 430 activists were being moved to Ramon Airport in southern Israel for deportation, while others were processed through Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv.
The incident dates back to Tuesday evening, when Israeli forces completed the interception of more than 50 boats from the Global Sumud Flotilla. The vessels were reportedly sailing in international waters en route to Gaza when they were stopped.
The mass detention has triggered strong international criticism, with foreign ministers from at least 10 countries — including Spain, Brazil and India — describing the action as a “blatant violation of international law and international humanitarian law”.
Since then, pressure has continued to mount on Israel, even from some of its close allies. Outrage intensified after far-right Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir shared a video on X showing him taunting detained activists who appeared kneeling with their hands tied.
In response, countries such as France, Canada, Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands have summoned Israeli ambassadors to express their concerns. Meanwhile, European Council President Antonio Costa said he was “appalled” by Ben-Gvir’s conduct, calling it “completely unacceptable”.
