Forget what you think you know about Yoruba deities, Lagos traditionalists say it’s time to tell the real story behind Isese.

Lagos was buzzing with culture, chants and colours as traditionalists came out in their numbers to celebrate Isese Day — and this time, they had a clear message: understand us before you judge us.

As reported by cbinews.tv, Isese Day, which is marked every year on August 20th, is so much more than a festival. It’s a powerful celebration of Yoruba indigenous culture, spirituality and heritage. It’s that one special day set aside to honour our ancestors, celebrate our deities, and keep those rich ancestral traditions alive.

And this year, Lagos State didn’t play small. To make sure Lagosians and tourists alike got a truly unforgettable experience, the Government declared Thursday a work-free day for all public servants. Talk about putting culture first!

But beyond the white garments, beads and drumming, there was a deeper conversation happening.

In an exclusive chat with CBI News correspondent Femi Fabunmi, for cbinews.tv, some prominent traditionalists got candid about what Isese really means to them.

We heard from High Chief Ifagbemi, the Araba of Mushinland, who broke down the spiritual significance of the day and why Isese remains the bedrock of Yoruba identity.

Toyin Atobatele, a teacher, shared her personal journey with the religion and why she believes young people need to reconnect with their roots instead of running from it.

And Chief Ajayi Awodele, the Erini Awo of Mushinland, spoke passionately about the urgent need to correct the wild misconceptions people have about Yoruba deities — you know, those old tales that paint our tradition in a bad light.
