Tehran’s new supreme leader just drew a red line in the sand — and he says America’s military foothold in the Gulf is running out of friends.
According to cbinewstv, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei has declared that Gulf nations will no longer act as “shields” for US military bases in the region.
In a written statement broadcast by state television on Tuesday to mark Eid al-Adha, Khamenei warned that the “hands of time will not turn backwards.”
“What is certain in this regard is that the hands of time will not turn backwards, and the nations and lands of the region will no longer serve as shields for American bases,” he said, cbinewstv reported.
Khamenei, who took office in March and has yet to make a public appearance, added that the US “in addition to no longer having any safe haven in the region for aggression and the establishment of military bases, is moving further and further away from its former position with each passing day.”
The comments come as Tehran and Washington continue diplomatic exchanges aimed at ending the conflict that began on 28 February and quickly spread across the region. A fragile ceasefire has been in place since 8 April.
Iran’s foreign ministry said the two sides have found common ground on many issues, but cautioned that a final agreement to end the war is not yet imminent, cbinews.tv noted.
Tensions on the ground remain high. On Tuesday, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed they had downed a US drone and fired on other aircraft attempting to enter Iranian airspace, though they did not say when the incidents occurred.
In its statement, the Guards warned “against any violation of the ceasefire by the aggressor US military and considers its right to reciprocal response legitimate and certain.”
Meanwhile, US Central Command said on Monday that its forces had struck missile sites in southern Iran and targeted boats allegedly trying to lay mines, despite the ceasefire. Iran has not officially confirmed the US strikes, but state media reported explosions in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas without confirming the source.
Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, succeeded his father Ali Khamenei, who was killed in the opening US-Israel strikes on 28 February. Those strikes triggered a wave of retaliatory attacks by Tehran across the region, cbinews.tv reported.
