Infantino ends speculation, backs Iran’s participation in 2026 World Cup in US...
President of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, has confirmed that Iran will participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be hosted by United States, Canada, and Mexico.
CBI News reports that the clarification puts to rest speculation that Italy could be drafted in as a late replacement.
Uncertainty had surrounded Iran’s participation due to geopolitical tensions and the fact that some of their group matches are scheduled to be played in the United States.
However, Infantino dismissed the concerns, stressing the unifying role of football.
“Of course, Iran will play in the United States of America. The reason for that is simple, because we have to unite. We have to bring people together,” he said.
The confirmation effectively ends speculation about Italy’s possible return to the tournament.
The rumours gained traction after comments by envoy Paolo Zampolli suggested a potential late inclusion.
Italian football authorities had earlier indicated they would not favour entering the competition under such circumstances.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to begin on June 11.
Iran are scheduled to face New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles, before taking on Egypt in Seattle later in the group stage.
