Iran was on Saturday hit by U.S.-Israel airstrikes...
Iran vowed on Saturday to deliver a “crushing” response after the United States and Israel carried out strikes on its territory, escalating tensions following days of warnings over Tehran’s nuclear and missile programmes.
Explosions were heard in the Iranian cities of Kermanshah, Lorestan, Tabriz, Isfahan and Karaj, according to local reports.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said the strikes were pre-emptive.
“The State of Israel launched a pre-emptive attack against Iran to remove threats to the State of Israel,” Katz said.
The attack followed a 12-day air war between Israel and Iran in June and repeated U.S.-Israeli warnings that they would strike again if Tehran pressed ahead with its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.
An Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran was preparing counterattacks that would be “crushing”.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was reportedly not in Tehran when missiles struck and had been moved to a secure location, Iranian media said.
Ebrahim Azizi, head of the Iranian parliament’s National Security Commission, said Israel and the United States had embarked on a dangerous course.
“We warned you! Now you have started down a path which end is no longer in your control,” he wrote on social media.
U.S. President Donald Trump said the operation was aimed at protecting American interests.
“A short time ago, the United States military began major combat operations in Iran. Our objective is to defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social account.
