Blockade cripples Hormuz trade as Iran maintains export flows..
Iran became the leading exporter of commodities through the Strait of Hormuz in March as shipments from other major producers collapsed following Tehran’s blockade of the strategic waterway, data from analytics firm Kpler showed.
Iran, the fifth-largest exporter through the strait, saw its shipments decline by 26% compared with the previous 12-month average. By contrast, exports from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq and Qatar plunged by at least 96% each over the same period.
Tehran restricted access to the strait after coming under attack from the United States and Israel on February 28, allowing only limited vessel movement since then.
The disruption has raised concerns over a potential global energy crisis, as roughly one-fifth of the world’s crude oil and liquefied natural gas normally transits the route. Asian economies have been among the hardest hit in recent weeks.
A U.S. blockade of Iranian ports has further constrained trade flows along the already disrupted corridor.
Bahrain and Kuwait recorded no commodity shipments through the strait in March, while Qatar — typically a key LNG exporter — shipped only 45,000 tonnes of butane and propane, with no LNG exports recorded.
The data showed Crude oil accounted for 81% of Iran’s exports through the Strait of Hormuz in March, up from an average of 62% between March 2025 and February 2026.
