From football legend to political exile, former Iran captain Ali Karimi faces a new blow as authorities move to confiscate multiple properties tied to him—escalating a long-running clash between the athlete and the state.
Iranian authorities have announced the seizure of six properties allegedly connected to former national football team captain Ali Karimi, who now lives in exile and has become one of the most outspoken critics of the Islamic Republic.
The judiciary claims the assets include two commercial units and four residential properties, stating they have been confiscated “for the benefit of the people.” Officials allege Karimi has engaged in activities against national security, a charge frequently used against dissidents following the wave of protests that erupted in recent years.
Karimi, once celebrated as one of Asia’s greatest football talents and nicknamed the “Asian Maradona” during his time at Bayern Munich, has used social media in recent years to support anti-government protests and express support for Iran’s pre-revolution monarchy.
According to Iran’s Mizan news agency, Karimi was labelled “one of the traitors to the homeland,” accusing him of supporting hostile forces against the country. He left Iran in 2022 and is believed to be residing in the Gulf region, though he has not publicly responded to the latest seizure.
He was previously charged in absentia for backing protests triggered by the death of Mahsa Amini, which led to nationwide demonstrations over women’s rights and political freedoms.
This is not the first case of asset confiscation tied to political dissent. Iranian authorities have also recently reversed the seizure of assets belonging to some athletes, including members of the national women’s football team, following complex cases involving asylum claims abroad.
The development comes as Iran prepares for increased global attention ahead of upcoming international football tournaments, with the men’s national team scheduled to compete in the World Cup in the United States under heightened political scrutiny.
