Iran executes Swedish citizen, prompting condemnation from Sweden and European Union...
Iran has executed a Swedish citizen, according to an announcement by Sweden’s Foreign Minister, Maria Malmer Stenergard, on Wednesday.
The individual, whose identity was not disclosed by the Sweden government, was arrested by Iranian authorities in June last year.
Stenergard said Swedish officials had repeatedly raised the case with Iranian authorities prior to the execution.
“The death penalty is an inhumane, cruel and irreversible punishment. Sweden, together with the rest of the EU, condemns its application in all circumstances,” she said.
The minister also criticised the judicial process leading to the execution, noting that it failed to meet acceptable standards of due process.
CBI News reports that the development comes amid rising tensions between Iran and Western nations, particularly involving the United States and Israel.
The execution is being viewed as part of broader geopolitical strains, with Iran maintaining that it is responding to what it considers aggression against its sovereignty.
Both Sweden and the European Union continue to oppose capital punishment in all forms, describing it as a violation of fundamental human rights regardless of the offence.
As of the time of the announcement, Iranian authorities had not publicly commented on the execution or disclosed details regarding the charges against the Swedish citizen.
