Iran has issued a fresh statement on the strategic Strait of Hormuz, insisting it remains open to friendly nations despite ongoing tensions affecting global shipping and energy markets.
According to a report by cbinews.tv, Iran has clarified that the Strait of Hormuz remains open to vessels from countries it considers friendly, while restricting access to what it calls “enemies.”
Speaking on the side-lines of the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi on Friday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi explained the country’s position.
“From our point of view, the Strait of Hormuz is not closed, particularly not to friendly nations. It is closed only to our enemies,” Araghchi said.
He also hinted at a possible easing of naval restrictions, but made it clear that any change would depend on the end of hostilities involving the U.S. and Israel.
“Then we will ensure that safe passage is guaranteed for every single ship,” he added.
The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes, came under Iranian control shortly after the conflict escalated. Since then, maritime traffic has faced major disruptions, including threats, inspections, and reported attacks that significantly slowed movement through the waterway.
The tensions have also contributed to rising global energy and fuel prices. Reports indicate that the strait has been mined, further increasing concerns among shipping operators.
Despite these developments, Tehran continues to maintain that the waterway is not officially blocked. However, in practice, shipping companies are required to coordinate with Iranian authorities and are often directed through narrow coastal corridors under Iranian oversight.
