INEC postpones nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 general elections.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the postponement of its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise, stating that it will now be conducted after the 2027 General Elections.
CBI News reports that the decision was reached during a meeting between the commission and all Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) held on Friday, April 10, 2026.
The development was disclosed in a press statement issued by the commission the same day, following what it described as extensive deliberations among its senior officials.
INEC explained that the postponement came after careful discussions with Resident Electoral Commissioners from across the country, adding that the exercise aimed at updating the National Register of Voters would now be rescheduled to a later date after the next general election cycle.
In the statement signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, the commission stressed the importance of the exercise despite the delay.
“The voter revalidation exercise remains a critical component of the commission’s mandate to maintain a credible and up-to-date National Register of Voters,” the statement noted.
The commission reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the integrity of the voter register, describing the revalidation process as a vital part of its constitutional responsibility.
