INEC confirms it has completed timetable and schedule for 2027 general elections.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that it has completed work on the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections.
This was announced on Wednesday in Abuja by INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, during a meeting with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs).
Amupitan noted that the commission has submitted its recommendations to the National Assembly regarding the ongoing Electoral Act amendment, cautioning that the final outcome of the legislative process may affect some of INEC’s planned schedules.
“We have made submissions to the National Assembly on the ongoing amendment of the Electoral Act. Depending on the outcome, some adjustments may be necessary. However, INEC is ready for the 2027 polls based on the current Electoral Act,” Amupitan said.
CBI News recalls that the passage of the Electoral Act 2022 (Repeal and Re-enactment Bill 2026), remained unresolved as of Tuesday.
The Senate spent over four hours in a closed-door session examining the report of a seven-member ad hoc committee set up to harmonise lawmakers’ submissions and opinions on the bill, but failed to reach a final decision.
After the prolonged deliberations, Senate President Godswill Akpabio declined to disclose the outcome and adjourned plenary to the next legislative day.
The delay has further postponed amendments widely regarded as critical for strengthening Nigeria’s electoral framework ahead of future elections.
