Court finds men guilty of premeditated murder of tourist in Lombok.
An Indonesian court sentenced two men to 18 years in prison on Wednesday for the murder of a Spanish tourist last year on the resort island of Lombok.
CBI News reports that the remains of 72-year-old Maria Matilde Munoz Cazorla were discovered on a beach weeks after she was reported missing in July, according to local police.
The court in the city of Mataram found Suhaeli, 34, and Heri Ridwan, 27, legally and convincingly guilty of premeditated murder.
Judge Kelik Trimargo said the men had entered Cazorla’s hotel room in the Senggigi area intending to rob her. When she was awakened by sounds from a nearby mosque, the two men strangled her to death.
The judge described their actions as deliberate and issued an 18-year sentence, matching the prosecutors’ request. Suhaeli and Heri have seven days to decide whether to appeal.
A forensic examination revealed trauma to Cazorla’s head, neck, and chest, and listed the cause of death as asphyxiation. The defendants attempted to move the body before burying it at the beach where it was later found.
