India bids to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, aiming to boost its Olympic 2036 ambitions.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) says India has formally submitted a bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, aiming to boost its chances of staging the 2036 Olympic Games.
CBI News reports that an IOA delegation presented the proposal at Commonwealth Sport headquarters in London, with the backing of India’s federal government, which approved the required guarantees earlier this week.
“This is not just a bid to stage a sporting event – it is our commitment to the Commonwealth family to deliver Games that are athlete-centred, inclusive, sustainable and future-facing,” IOA Executive Council member Harpal Singh said.
Singh added that a successful bid would mark a step towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s long-term vision of bringing the Olympics to India in 2036. “Hosting the Commonwealth Games will showcase our capability, strengthen credibility and lay the foundation for the Olympic journey ahead,” he said.
Canada and Nigeria are also bidding, with the winning host city for 2030 to be announced at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow this November.
The Commonwealth Games have struggled to secure hosts in recent years, with Victoria, Australia pulling out of 2026 due to rising costs, forcing Scotland’s Glasgow to step in.
