Eze Paulinus Ekwueme was killed on Friday...
The police in Nigeria’s Imo state have launched a manhunt for the killers of a traditional ruler, authorities said on Saturday, after he and five others were killed in an attack.
Police said Eze Paulinus Ekwueme, the traditional ruler of Ochia Autonomous Community in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area, was attacked by armed assailants on Friday along Asa Awara Road in Assa community.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, said in a statement that tactical units had been deployed alongside other security agencies to track down those responsible.
The attack followed a distress report received by the Ohaji Police Division at about 1630 hours on April 10, indicating that gunmen had ambushed the monarch.
“Regrettably, the attack led to the death of the monarch, alongside five other yet-to-be-identified victims,” Okoye said.
He added that security operatives recovered burnt bodies at the scene, which were later evacuated to the Federal University Teaching Hospital in Owerri for preservation and autopsy.
Police said a full investigation had been launched, with operations ongoing to apprehend the suspects and recover weapons used in the attack.
Commissioner of Police Audu Bosso also visited the community for an on-the-spot assessment and to reassure residents, promising that those responsible would be brought to justice.
Authorities urged members of the public to provide information to aid the investigation, directing tips to the nearest police station or contact the command through 08034773600 and 08148024755.
