Ilaje Protest: Coastal Communities Decry Environmental Crisis in Ondo

Twenty communities could be wiped off the map — and now they’re saying enough is enough.
So, this is big. No fewer than 20 coastal communities in Ilaje, Ondo State, are set to take to the streets this week over what they’ve described as a full-blown environmental and humanitarian emergency.
According to cbinews.tv, the peaceful protest is being led by the Coalition of Ilaje Ravaged Communities, with advocacy backing from Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa, CAPPA.
Tagged “Operation Save Ilaje: Protect Our Coastal Communities from Extinction,” the demonstration is scheduled for Thursday, August 6, 2026, by 9:00 a.m at the Ilaje Local Government Headquarters in Igbokoda.
And it’s not just a handful of people. Residents from Ayetoro, Awoye, Mese, Gbagira, Jiringho, Ilowo, Ilepete, Idiogba, Oroto, Alagbon, Erunona, Olotu, Yaye, Womitenren, Ogboti, Lepe, Ehinmore, Abetobo, and Abereke are all expected to turn up.
Why? For decades, these communities have literally watched their homes, farmlands, and fishing grounds vanish. We’re talking relentless ocean surges, brutal coastal erosion, oil spills and pollution. For places like Ayetoro and Abereke, it’s now critical — families are being displaced, and ancestral homes are disappearing into the sea.
So, what are they asking for? It’s pretty straightforward:
* Urgent action to stop the erosion and sea incursions
* Proper, scientifically designed coastal protection infrastructure that actually works
* A full environmental assessment and clean-up of oil-polluted areas
* Oil companies to be held accountable and to fix the damage
* Compensation and livelihood restoration for those affected
* Protection for fishing grounds and aquatic ecosystems
* And more transparency and community involvement in any government plans for the coastline
CAPPA is also calling on the media to show up, cover the protest, and amplify the voices of the people on the frontline of Nigeria’s coastal crisis.
This is one to watch.
