Nigeria Police chief pledges pension reforms for retirees..
Olatunji Rilwan Disu, Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, has pledged to directly advocate for pension reforms and improved welfare for retired police officers, placing their concerns at the forefront of the force’s agenda.
A statement by Anthony Placid, Spokesman said Disu made the commitment during a meeting with a delegation of retired officers, where he acknowledged persistent challenges surrounding pensions, gratuities and salaries, describing them as urgent issues requiring immediate attention.
According to the statement, Disu said his administration would pursue lasting solutions while urging retirees to remain patient as authorities work through administrative processes.
The police chief outlined two channels to escalate retirees’ grievances to the highest levels of government. He said retirees could submit petitions through an executive liaison mechanism, which he would personally present to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to support the signing of a pension bill.
Disu also assured retirees of protection should they choose to stage peaceful demonstrations, saying their rights to civic expression would be respected.
The statement said the police boss announced plans to work with relevant authorities to improve employment opportunities for the children of retired officers in future recruitment exercises.
He reiterated that the dignity and financial security of retired officers were “non-negotiable,” adding that the police force remains committed to supporting its personnel even after retirement.
