In a move aimed at boosting accountability and public trust, Tunji Disu has issued a strict directive mandating all police officers to visibly display their name tags while on duty—except those on undercover operations.
CBI News reports that the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, has ordered all personnel of the Nigeria Police Force to wear name tags on their uniforms at all times to ensure easy identification by the public.
According to the IGP, the directive applies to all officers except those engaged in covert or undercover assignments.
Speaking on Tuesday, Disu emphasized that the practice is already being observed at the highest levels of the force, including Commissioners of Police, and should become standard across all commands.
“All police officers should have their name tags. As you can see, those of us here—including Commissioners of Police—are properly identified, except those on undercover duties. This must be the standard across the board,” he stated.
He further stressed that Commissioners of Police are fully accountable for everything that happens within their respective jurisdictions, noting that the directive forms part of broader discussions on improving operational standards and discipline within the force.
IGP Speaks on State Police
On the ongoing debate surrounding state policing, Disu revealed that the police leadership has proactively submitted its recommendations to the National Assembly of Nigeria.
According to him, the move followed signals from the Federal Government indicating plans to establish state police structures.
“We took the initiative to develop our position on how state police should operate. This involved extensive analysis and has now been formally transmitted,” he explained.
Why This Matters
The directive is seen as a step toward:
Enhancing transparency in policing
Strengthening public confidence
Improving officer accountability nationwide
