IED planted by suspected Bandits....
The Zamfara state Police command has confirmed that a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated along the Gusau–Funtua highway, blew up a trailer and caused traffic disruption along the highway.
The explosion occurred in the early hours of Wednesday at Unguwar Mai Chida, when the trailer, loaded with cement, reportedly stepped on an IED allegedly planted by suspected bandits.
Eyewitnesses said the blast tore through the ill-fated truck, which was travelling from Kaduna to Sokoto, resulting in a gridlock along the busy highway.
Although no life was lost in the incident, the driver sustained injuries and was rescued alive.
A resident disclosed that the explosion happened just hours after a combined team of police and military operatives cleared and reopened the Kucheri–Danjibga–Keta road in Tsafe Local Government Area, which had been closed for over a month following the discovery of explosive devices planted by criminal elements.
Confirming the development, the Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Maikaba, said joint tactical teams of the police and the military, particularly the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) units, had earlier detected and safely detonated multiple IEDs along the Kucheri–Danjibga–Keta axis.
Security operatives have since intensified surveillance along major routes in Zamfara state to prevent further attacks.
