Nigeria Senate backs electronic election results transmission nationwide...
Former Abia Governor and the Abia North senatorial district Lawmaker Orji Uzor Kalu says he supported and added his voice to the Senate’s approval of the electronic transmission of election results from polling units across Nigeria.
“This balanced approach strengthens transparency, fairness and credibility in our electoral process, while ensuring voters in network-challenged communities are not disenfranchised,” Senator Orji Uzor Kalu said in a statement.
He added that the decision would help ensure Nigeria’s democracy works for all citizens, regardless of location.
CBI News reports that the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday approved the electronic transmission of election results from polling units, adopting amendments to the Electoral Act aimed at strengthening transparency and credibility in the voting process.
Lawmakers amended Clause 60(3) to allow presiding officers to transmit results electronically after results sheets, known as Form EC8A, have been completed and signed.
Under the provision, electronic transmission becomes the primary method where the required technology is available and functional. Where electronic transmission fails or is impossible, the duly signed Form EC8A will remain the valid source of results.
