Tinubu recalls exile in the UK during military rule...
President Bola Tinubu has reflected on his time in exile during Nigeria’s military era, recounting how he found refuge in the United Kingdom while actively involved in the pro-democracy struggle.
Speaking at a state banquet held at Windsor Castle on Wednesday, Tinubu expressed gratitude for the protection he received while facing threats from Nigeria’s former military regime.
“Like many Nigerians involved in the pro-democracy struggle, I found safety here, and I recall that my residence was placed under Metropolitan Police surveillance for protection following threats from agents of the junta,” he said.
CBI News reports that the president went into exile during the regime of Sani Abacha (1993–1998), after participating in the pro-democracy movement that opposed military rule following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election.
Tinubu described the period as a defining moment in his political journey, noting that the support he received during exile remains significant in Nigeria’s democratic history.
“That solidarity remains etched in our collective memory, and it is deeply humbling for me to stand before Your Majesty today as the President of a democratic Nigeria,” he added.
He made the remarks while addressing King Charles III, Queen Camilla, Prince William, and Catherine, Princess of Wales during a diplomatic visit aimed at strengthening Nigeria–UK relations.
During his speech, Tinubu highlighted the longstanding ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, pointing to shared democratic values, legal traditions, and institutional systems shaped by British governance.
