Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting...
Hundreds of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip gathered on Friday March 20, 2026, for Eid al-Fitr prayers amid widespread destruction caused by the recent war.
Footage showed worshippers who prayed in open spaces and beside the rubble of damaged buildings, before they took part in small-scale celebrations organised with the support of an Egyptian committee.
“Despite the pain and grief, we will rebuild our country and celebrate Eid,” a local said.
"I hope we never return to war and that we live out the rest of our lives in peace because we are tired of war and deserve to live in peace," a second resident added.
Children took part in activities organised by volunteers, with sweets distributed and street performances staged. Balloons were also released as families marked the holiday.
Palestinian media reported that prayers were held in public squares and among the ruins of mosques, after more than 1,100 of Gaza’s roughly 1,240 mosques were partially or completely destroyed.
The celebration took place after a ceasefire was reached between Hamas and Israel, announced under an initiative by Donald Trump, which brought an end to nearly two years of conflict.
